About Digital Container Shipping Association

The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) is a non-profit established by the largest container shipping companies in the world, with a mission to drive digitalisation and standardisation across the industry. For an organisation that sets the global standards for data exchange, its own digital infrastructure must be a benchmark of efficiency, security, and performance. DCSA partnered with Bitcube to maintain its web ecosystem and to modernise and optimise the heavy AWS infrastructure powering its global online presence.

The Challenge

DCSA's digital footprint spans multiple websites and complex documentation hubs. The primary challenge was twofold: architectural bloat and high infrastructure costs. Their existing AWS setup was over-provisioned and lacked the granular management needed to scale efficiently, resulting in monthly overheads that didn't align with actual usage. Their Prismic-driven content workflow also needed refinement so non-technical team members could deploy new pages quickly without breaking the React-based frontend.

Our Solution

We took a proactive approach to both the frontend experience and the backend engine. Using a modern headless stack (Next.js and Prismic), we maintained and expanded the reusable 'slices' that let DCSA build flexible, high-performance pages. The core of our impact was an infrastructure overhaul: we transitioned their deployment pipeline to AWS ECS and ECR — away from an over-provisioned, under-managed Kubernetes cluster — audited the cloud environment to remove redundant services and rightsize instances, and integrated advanced analytics so the team could see how their standards and documentation are consumed globally.

Key Features

  • 60% reduction in AWS infrastructure costs
  • Containerised deployment (AWS ECS / ECR)
  • Headless CMS optimisation (Prismic slices)
  • Enterprise-grade website maintenance

The Results

The most significant outcome was a dramatic improvement in operational efficiency: by re-engineering the deployment environment and optimising resource allocation, we reduced AWS infrastructure costs by 60% without sacrificing performance or uptime. Beyond the numbers, our ongoing maintenance of the Prismic slices and Next.js features keeps DCSA agile — able to launch new initiatives and documentation updates faster than ever, backed by a lean, robust cloud architecture that scales on demand.
